How to combine PDF files into one
Quick answer: To combine PDF files into one, open a PDF merge tool, add all the PDFs you want to join, drag them into the order you want, then merge and save the result as a single file. In Quick PDF, open Merge, add your files (photos work too), arrange the pages and tap Merge & download.
Sign in with Google or email and start editing. Saving your file starts a free trial: 7 days on yearly ($29.78/yr) or 2 days on monthly ($2.99/mo). Cancel anytime. 🔒 Your file stays on your device.
Maybe you have a cover letter, a résumé and two reference letters as separate PDFs, or a landlord wants your pay stubs, ID and bank statements as one attachment. Sending five files is messy; one tidy PDF is easier for you and for whoever opens it.
This guide shows how to put PDFs together with Quick PDF in your browser on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows or Chromebook, how to get the page order right, and what to do when the combined file comes out too big or a form loses its fields.
Combine PDF files into one with Quick PDF
- Open the Merge tool Go to quickpdfapp.com in your browser and open Merge. Sign in with Google or with your email and password if you haven't already.
- Add your PDF files Choose the PDFs you want to join from your device. On a phone the file picker shows the Files app, Downloads and connected drives such as iCloud Drive or Google Drive. You can add JPG or PNG photos in the same batch.
- Put the pages in order Drag pages or files into the order you want them in the final document. Check that the first page is the one the reader should see first, such as a cover sheet or signed form.
- Add anything you forgot If a file is missing, add it now rather than merging twice. Extra pages you don't want can be deleted afterwards in Organize pages, so don't worry if a file has one page too many.
- Tap Merge & download Quick PDF joins everything into one PDF on your device and saves it. From your phone you can then share it to Mail, Messages, WhatsApp or a drive through the share sheet.
- Open the result and check it Scroll through the new file once before you send it. Confirm every page is there, nothing is sideways and the order makes sense.
Combine multiple PDFs into one on each device
The steps above are the same everywhere because Quick PDF runs in the browser. What changes is where your files live:
- iPhone and iPad: PDFs from Mail and Safari usually end up in the Files app, under On My iPhone or iCloud Drive, often in the Downloads folder. Save attachments there first so the picker can find them.
- Android: look in the Downloads folder or the Files by Google app. Attachments saved from Gmail usually land in Downloads.
- Mac: files from Safari or Chrome go to the Downloads folder in Finder unless you changed it. You can select several files at once in the picker with the Command key.
- Windows and Chromebook: use the Downloads folder or wherever you saved the files. Hold Ctrl to pick several files in one go.
There's a separate walkthrough for combining PDFs on iPhone if you're mostly on your phone.
Getting the page order right
The most common mistake when people put PDFs together is the order. A few habits help:
- Rename files before you start with a number in front (1-cover, 2-application, 3-ID). Many pickers sort by name, so they arrive in roughly the right order.
- Think like the reader. Signed forms and summaries go first, supporting documents after.
- Fix order later if needed. If you spot a page in the wrong place after merging, open the file in Organize pages and drag it where it belongs. Our guide to rearranging PDF pages covers this in detail.
- Watch for sideways pages. Scans and phone photos sometimes come in rotated. Rotate them in Organize pages so the reader doesn't have to tilt their head.
Mixing PDFs and photos in one file
You don't need to convert photos first. Merge accepts JPG and PNG images alongside PDFs, so you can add a photo of your driver's license or a screenshot of a receipt and it becomes a page in the combined document.
If you only have photos and no PDFs at all, JPG to PDF gives you more control over page size (fit to photo, Letter or A4). For paper documents, scanning them with your camera produces cleaner pages than a plain photo.
Other ways to put PDFs together
Your device may already have a basic way to join PDFs. They're worth knowing about:
| Option | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Mac Preview | Dragging pages from one PDF's sidebar into another | Mac only; easy to save over the original by mistake |
| iPhone Files app | Selecting several files and choosing Create PDF from the More menu | Little control over order before it combines |
| Quick PDF Merge | Same steps on any device, PDFs and photos together, drag-to-order | Needs an account; one merged file per run |
If you also need to sign, fill in or edit the pages, doing it all in one place saves round trips between apps.
Troubleshooting combined PDFs
- The combined file is too big to email. Joining files adds their sizes together. Run the result through Compress and try the Balanced level first. See what to do when a PDF is too large to email.
- A fillable form isn't fillable any more. When files are merged, form fields are flattened, which means the answers become part of the page. Fill in and check every form before you merge.
- A file won't add. If a PDF is password protected, remove the password first with Unlock (you'll need to know it), then try again.
- I can't find my file in the picker. On a phone, save the attachment to Files or Downloads first; files that only live inside an email app don't always show up.
- A page is blank or upside down. Delete or rotate it in Organize pages after merging.
Questions people ask
Can I combine PDF files on my phone?
Yes. Quick PDF runs in Safari on iPhone and in Chrome or another browser on Android. Open Merge, pick the files from your Files app or Downloads, drag them into order and save the combined PDF. You can then share it from the phone's share sheet.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
You can add several PDFs and photos in one merge. Because the work happens on your own device, very large batches depend on how much memory your phone or computer has. If it feels slow, merge in two smaller groups and then merge those two results.
Will merging PDFs reduce the quality?
Merging is not compression: it puts the existing pages together rather than shrinking them, so text and images should look the same as in the originals. The file size is roughly the sizes of the originals added together. Compress the result separately if you need it smaller.
Does merging keep fillable form fields?
No. Form fields are flattened when files are combined, so whatever was typed into them stays visible but can't be changed afterwards. Fill in and double-check any form before merging, or keep a fillable copy aside.
Are my files uploaded when I combine them?
No. Quick PDF opens and joins the files inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server to do the merge, which matters for documents like ID, tax forms and bank statements.
Can I change the order after I merge?
Yes. Open the combined PDF in Organize pages and drag pages into a new order, then save it again. You can also rotate, delete, duplicate or extract pages there.
