Updated November 3, 2026 · 6 min read

Quick answer: To fill out a PDF, open it in a PDF editor and tap each box to type your answers, tick checkboxes and choose dropdown options. If nothing happens when you tap, the form is flat: use Add text to type on the page. Sign if needed, then download, choosing Flatten form to lock in your answers.

Job applications, school forms, medical intake sheets, rental applications, tax forms: most paperwork now arrives as a PDF with a note saying “fill out and return”. Printing, writing by hand and scanning it back still works, but it is slower and usually looks worse than typing straight into the file.

This guide is the overview: how to tell what kind of PDF you have, how each type of field works, how to do it on any device with Quick PDF, and how to fix the problems that make people give up and reach for a pen.

Fill out a PDF form with Quick PDF

  1. Open the form Go to quickpdfapp.com on your phone or computer, sign in, open Fill PDF form and choose the PDF from Files, Downloads or your computer.
  2. Test a box Tap the first blank. If a cursor appears, the form is fillable. If nothing happens, it is a flat form and you will use Add text instead.
  3. Fill every field Type into text boxes, tap checkboxes and radio buttons, and pick answers from dropdown menus. Zoom in on small boxes.
  4. Type where there are no fields For blanks without a box, choose Add text, tap the spot and type. Match the size so it fits on the line.
  5. Sign and date Tap Sign to draw your signature, type it in a script font or upload a photo of it, then place it on the signature line. Type the date beside it with Add text.
  6. Download the filled form Tap Download and choose Flatten form if you are sending it to someone, or keep it fillable if you will change it later.

First, find out what kind of PDF you have

How you fill a PDF depends on how it was made. There are three kinds:

TypeHow to spot itHow to fill it
Fillable formBoxes highlight or show a cursor when tappedType directly into the fields with Fill PDF form
Flat digital formLines and boxes are visible but tapping does nothing; text can be selectedType on top with Add text
Scanned or photographed formLooks like a photo; text can’t be selected at allType on top with Add text; White-out to cover mistakes

Many forms mix the first two: the main fields work but a few lines do not. Use the fields where they exist and Add text for the gaps. Flat forms get their own walkthrough in how to fill out a non-fillable PDF.

How each type of form field works

  • Text box: tap and type. Some boxes are set up for one line only and others for several lines; long answers may shrink or get cut off, so keep them short.
  • Checkbox: tap to tick, tap again to clear. You can tick as many as apply.
  • Radio buttons: round options where only one can be chosen, such as Yes or No. Tapping one clears the others in the same group.
  • Dropdown: tap to open a list and choose an option, common for states, countries and dates.
  • Signature line: many forms show a signature box that is really just a text field or a plain line. Use Sign to place your signature there.
  • Date fields: type the date exactly in the format printed on the form, for example MM/DD/YYYY.

Tip: fill the form from top to bottom and scroll back up once at the end. It is easy to skip a small checkbox or a second page that only appears further down.

Filling out a PDF on each device

Quick PDF runs in the browser, so the steps are the same everywhere. What changes is where the form is and how you tap:

  • iPhone and iPad: save the attachment to Files first, then open it from Safari. Full walkthrough: fill out a PDF on iPhone.
  • Android: downloaded forms are usually in the Downloads folder. Rotate the phone for bigger boxes.
  • Windows and Mac: choose the form from your Downloads folder; a full keyboard makes long answers much quicker.
  • Chromebook: open the form from the Files app’s Downloads folder in Chrome.

Long forms are easier on a computer, but a phone is fine for short ones. You can add Quick PDF to your home screen so it opens like an app next time.

Quick PDF is a good fit when a form needs more than typing: a signature, text on a flat page, a photo of an ID added with Image, a corrected mistake, or a locked final copy. The form is processed in your browser, so it stays on your device. For the details of saving and keeping answers, see how to fill out a PDF form and save it.

Troubleshooting common form problems

  • Typing in one box fills another box too. The form creator gave both fields the same name, so they mirror each other. Type the answer that fits both, or use Add text for the second spot.
  • My answer is too long for the box. Shorten it, or write “see attached” and add a blank page with the full answer using Organize pages.
  • The dropdown doesn’t have my answer. Choose the closest option, or pick Other if there is one, and explain with Add text or a Comment.
  • The fields are grey and won’t accept typing. The form may already be flattened or locked. Use Add text on top.
  • The form only shows a “Please wait” message. It is an older Adobe-only form type; ask the sender for a standard PDF.
  • I need to change an answer after flattening. Keep a fillable copy as a backup. On a flat copy, cover the old answer with White-out and type the new one.

When the form holds a Social Security number or bank details, read how to send a PDF securely before you send it back.

Questions people ask

How do I fill out a PDF form on my computer?

Open quickpdfapp.com in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, sign in, open Fill PDF form and choose the PDF. Click each field to type, tick boxes and choose dropdown options, add a signature if needed, then download the filled form.

How do I know if a PDF is fillable?

Tap or click on a blank box. If a cursor appears or the box highlights, the form is fillable. If nothing happens, it is a flat form, and you can still type on it with Add text.

How do I fill out and sign a PDF?

Fill in the fields, then tap Sign. Draw your signature, type your name in one of six script fonts or upload a photo of your signature, and place it on the signature line. Type the date next to it and download the form.

Can I fill out a PDF without printing it?

Yes. Type your answers directly into the PDF, add your signature on screen and download or share the completed file. There is no need to print, handwrite or scan anything.

Should I flatten a PDF form before sending it?

Usually yes, when it goes to an employer, landlord, school or office. Flattening makes your answers part of the page so they look the same in every viewer and can’t be changed by accident. Keep a fillable copy for yourself.

Why does my filled PDF look blank when someone else opens it?

Some viewers don’t display form field values the same way. Download the form again with Flatten form turned on, so the answers become part of the page and show in every viewer.
