How to remove the password from a PDF

Updated November 3, 2026 · 6 min read

Quick answer: To remove a password from a PDF, open the file with its current password and save an unlocked copy. In Quick PDF, open Unlock, choose the PDF, type the password once and download the copy, which then opens without asking. You need to know the password: no legitimate tool removes one you don't have.

Typing a password every time you open the same statement, payslip or report gets old fast, and some upload portals and printers refuse password-protected files altogether. Saving an unlocked copy fixes both.

Below you'll find the steps with Quick PDF, built-in methods on each device, the difference between the two kinds of PDF password, and what to do when the password doesn't work or has been lost.

Remove a PDF password with Quick PDF Unlock

  1. Have the password ready Find the password the file was protected with. It may be in the email the PDF came with, a notice from the sender, or your password manager.
  2. Open Unlock Go to quickpdfapp.com/unlock-pdf in your browser and sign in. It works the same on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Chromebook.
  3. Choose the locked PDF Pick the file from Files, Downloads, Finder or File Explorer. It is opened in your browser on your own device and is not uploaded.
  4. Enter the password Type the password exactly, including capital letters, numbers and symbols. If it is wrong, the file stays locked and you can try again.
  5. Download the unlocked copy Save the new PDF. It opens without a password on any device. Give it a clear name so you know which copy is unprotected.

Two kinds of PDF password

PDFs can carry two different passwords, and it helps to know which one you are dealing with.

  • Open password (sometimes called a user password). The PDF won't show anything until you type it. This is the kind banks, payroll services and tax software use, and the kind Quick PDF's Unlock removes when you know it.
  • Permissions password (sometimes called an owner password). The file opens normally, but printing, copying or editing may be blocked. If your PDF opens without asking for anything yet some actions are greyed out, this is what you have. Unlock is built for open passwords, so it isn't the tool to rely on here; ask the person who created the file for an unrestricted version.

Other ways to remove a PDF password you know

If you only need to do this once, your device may already have a way. These methods all require the password too.

On iPhone and Android there is no simple built-in unlock option, which is where a browser tool is the practical choice.

What if you don't know or forgot the password?

Encryption is designed so that a file can't be opened without the password, and Quick PDF does not crack, guess or bypass passwords. These are the routes that actually work:

  1. Check where the file came from. Senders often explain the password in the email or a separate message. Search your inbox for the sender's name and the word password.
  2. Look for a pattern. Banks and payroll systems usually build passwords from details you know, such as part of your name, date of birth or account number. The notice that came with the file explains the format. Our guide to bank statement PDF passwords goes through this in detail.
  3. Check your password manager or the notes where you keep passwords, if you protected the file yourself.
  4. Ask for a new copy. The sender can resend it without a password or tell you the password again. For bank and card statements, you can usually download a fresh copy from your online account.

Only remove passwords from files you own or are allowed to open.

Troubleshooting: the password isn't accepted

  • Check capital letters. PDF passwords are case-sensitive. Caps Lock or the phone keyboard's automatic capital on the first letter is the most common reason a correct password fails.
  • Watch for copied spaces. Copying a password from an email can pick up a space before or after it. Type it by hand instead.
  • Check the date format. If the password includes a date, it might be DDMMYYYY rather than MMDDYYYY, or only part of the year. Re-read the sender's instructions.
  • Make sure it's the right file. Each month's statement or each sender may use a different password.
  • The file won't open at all. If even the correct password fails everywhere, the download may be incomplete or damaged. Download it again from the original source.

Keep the unlocked copy safe

Removing the password also removes its protection. An unlocked tax return, statement or ID scan can be read by anyone who gets hold of the file, so:

After unlocking: edit, sign or combine

Many people remove a password because they need to do something else with the file. Once unlocked, the PDF behaves like any other: you can edit text, add a signature, merge it with other documents or make it smaller. Do those edits on the unlocked copy, then protect the finished file again if it contains private information.

Questions people ask

Can you remove a password from a PDF without knowing it?

Not with a legitimate tool, and not with Quick PDF. A PDF's open password is part of its encryption, so the file can't be read without it. Ask the sender for the password or an unprotected copy, check the email the file came with, or download a fresh copy from the account it came from.

How do I unlock a PDF on my iPhone?

Open quickpdfapp.com/unlock-pdf in Safari, sign in, choose the locked PDF from the Files app, type the password and download the unlocked copy. It saves to Files, and from then on opens without a password in Files, Mail or any other app.

How do I remove a password from a PDF on Android?

Open Quick PDF's Unlock in Chrome, choose the PDF from your Downloads or Files app, enter the password and download the new copy. The unlocked file appears in Downloads and opens in any PDF viewer without a prompt.

Why does my PDF ask for a password?

Whoever created it added encryption to keep the contents private. Banks, payroll services, insurers and tax software do this routinely so statements can't be read if an email is intercepted or forwarded. The password, or how it's built, is normally explained in the message that came with the file.

Does removing the password change the PDF?

No. The pages, text and layout stay exactly the same. Only the encryption is taken off, so the file opens straight away. Your original locked file isn't changed either; Unlock saves a separate copy.

Can I remove printing or editing restrictions from a PDF?

Those come from a permissions password, which is different from a password needed to open the file. Quick PDF's Unlock is made for open passwords you know, so don't count on it for permission restrictions. The reliable route is to ask the document's creator for an unrestricted copy.

Do I have to pay to use Quick PDF?
