How to rotate a PDF and save it
Quick answer: To rotate a PDF and save it, use a tool that changes the pages themselves, not just your view. In Quick PDF, open Rotate, choose your PDF, rotate one page or all pages left or right, then download the file. The new PDF opens the right way up for anyone, on any device.
Sign in with Google or email and start editing. Saving your file starts a free trial: 7 days on yearly ($29.78/yr) or 2 days on monthly ($2.99/mo). Cancel anytime. 🔒 Your file stays on your device.
A sideways scan, an upside-down page from a phone photo, a landscape table stuck in a portrait document. You rotate it in your PDF viewer, close it, and next time it's sideways again. That's because most viewers only rotate your view, not the file.
This guide explains how to rotate PDF pages permanently with Quick PDF's Rotate tool in any browser, how to rotate just one page, and how built-in apps compare.
Rotate a PDF and save it with Quick PDF
- Open Rotate Go to quickpdfapp.com, sign in and open Rotate. It works in Safari, Chrome, Edge and other modern browsers.
- Choose your PDF Pick the file from your Files app, Downloads folder or computer. It's opened on your device, not uploaded.
- Rotate the pages Rotate all pages at once, or pick a single page and rotate just that one. Pages turn in quarter turns, left or right; turn twice to fix an upside-down page.
- Check every page Look over the thumbnails so every page is upright, including any landscape pages that should stay landscape.
- Download the rotated PDF Download the file. The rotation is saved into the new PDF for good, so it opens the right way for whoever you send it to.
Why rotating in a viewer doesn't stick
Many PDF viewers, including some browser viewers, have a rotate button that only changes how the page is shown to you right now. Close the file and the rotation is gone, and the person you email it to still sees it sideways.
To fix a PDF for everyone, the rotation has to be written into the file and the file saved again. That's what the Rotate tool does: it changes each page's orientation inside the PDF, then gives you a new file.
The same thing happens with some phone apps: the page looks fixed on your screen, but the file underneath hasn't changed. The only reliable test is to save, close, and open the file again.
Rotate one page or all pages
- All pages: best when the whole document was scanned or exported sideways.
- One page: best for a single landscape page, such as a wide table or chart, or one sheet that went into the scanner upside down.
- Mixed: rotate the whole document, then turn back the pages that were already right.
If you also need to move, delete or duplicate pages, Organize pages can rotate left or right along with all of that in one pass. See how to rearrange pages in a PDF.
Which way should it face?
A page is "right" when you can read it without turning your head, but there are a couple of exceptions worth knowing:
- Wide tables and charts are often designed in landscape. Leave them landscape; rotating them to portrait just makes the text tiny and sideways.
- Printed documents are usually expected in portrait. If someone will print the file, keep normal pages portrait so it prints without fuss.
- Forms and contracts should match the original paper. If the first page is portrait, every text page should be too.
Rotate before you sign, fill in or add text. Text and signatures are easiest to place on a page that's already upright, and you won't have to rotate your additions afterwards.
Built-in ways to rotate and save
| Option | Saves the rotation? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mac Preview | Yes, when you save | Tools > Rotate, then File > Save; overwrites the original unless you duplicate it |
| iPhone Files app | Yes | Open the PDF, show page thumbnails, long-press a page and choose Rotate |
| Browser PDF viewers | Often only your view | Fine for reading, not for fixing the file |
| Quick PDF Rotate | Yes, in a new file | Same steps on every device; original kept |
Whichever you use, open the saved file again to confirm the rotation stuck before you send it.
Rotating on each device
- iPhone and iPad: open quickpdfapp.com in Safari and pick the PDF from Files. The rotated copy saves to Files, ready to share.
- Android: open the site in Chrome and choose the file from Downloads. Share the result from the download notification or Files by Google.
- Windows and Chromebook: use Edge or Chrome. The rotated file goes to your Downloads folder.
- Mac: works in Safari, Chrome or Edge. Good when you don't want to overwrite the original in Preview.
Prevent sideways pages next time
- Scanning with a phone: hold the phone straight over the page, with the top of the paper at the top of the screen. Quick PDF's Scan to PDF lets you check each page before saving.
- Photos turned into PDFs: phone photos sometimes carry a rotation flag that some apps ignore. If a page comes out sideways, rotate it once after converting.
- Merging files: check orientation after you combine PDFs, since pages from different sources often disagree.
Questions people ask
How do I rotate a PDF permanently?
Use a tool that saves the rotation into the file. In Quick PDF, open Rotate, choose your PDF, rotate the pages and download. The new PDF stays rotated wherever it's opened.
Why does my PDF keep going back to sideways?
Your viewer probably rotated only the view, not the file. Closing it throws the rotation away. Rotate the pages with a tool that saves a new file, then open that file to check.
How do I rotate only one page of a PDF?
In Quick PDF's Rotate tool, pick the single page and rotate it left or right, leaving the others alone. Then download. Organize pages can do the same while you reorder or delete pages.
How do I rotate a PDF on iPhone and save it?
Open quickpdfapp.com in Safari, choose Rotate, pick the PDF from Files, rotate the pages and download. The rotated file saves to Files. You can also rotate a page in the Files app's page thumbnails.
How do I turn an upside-down PDF page the right way?
Rotate it twice in the same direction, which turns it a half turn. In Quick PDF's Rotate tool, select the page, rotate it twice, check that it reads normally, then download the file.
Does rotating a PDF reduce the quality?
No. Rotation turns the page without compressing it, so text and images should look exactly as they did. Text stays selectable.
Is my PDF uploaded when I rotate it?
No. Quick PDF rotates the pages inside your browser on your own device, so the document isn't sent to a server.
